“I have taken the initiative to recommend a new book titled “Modern Greece: What Everyone Needs to Know,” by Stathis N. Kalyvas, published by Oxford University Press in May 2015.

What I appreciate about Dr. Kalyvas’s book is its fresh approach to Greek history and current affairs. The format consists of questions that he responds to throughout the book. And as the questions are listed in the table of contents for easy look-up, the book becomes an excellent reference. Kalyvas takes positions whose time has come for consideration. He bases his conclusions on Greece’s oriental inclination and its status, which he describes as a very early “late modernizer.”

First, he argues that Greece is an unlikely trailblazer, whose history has foreshadowed key events in world politics. Second, he takes the more difficult position that the country’s pursuit of modernity has been largely successful, in spite of many flaws. He begins at the beginning and elucidates where Greece came from, why it evolved the way it did, and how its story speaks to broader themes. These themes include nationalism; state building; civil war; autocracy and democracy; populist politics; and, above all, the process of modernization. In covering the current crisis, Kalyvas answers questions as to how the crisis fits into Greek history, and how the past helps make sense of the present (and vice versa).

With tongue in cheek, he characterizes the Greek trajectory with a quote from Donna Tartt in “The Goldfinch:” “Maybe sometimes–the wrong way is the right way?You can take the wrong path and it still comes out where you want to be? Or, spin it another way, sometimes you can do everything wrong and it still turns out to be right?” I encourage you to read the book and recommend it to your students.”
