Icons from the Thracian Coast of the Black Sea

This book was published to accompany the exhibition 'Icons from the Thracian Coasts of the Black Sea', in the Museum of Byzantine Culture, Thessaloniki. The 52 Byzantine and Post- Byzantine icons presented and discussed come from Varna, Mesembria (Neseb?r), Sozopolis (Sozopol), Vasiliko (Tsarevo) and Agathoupolis (Ahtopol) on the Bulgarian coasts of the Black Sea, as well as from the mountain village of Brashlyan in Standja. These are very ancient cities founded by Ionian colonists in the 7th century BC, excepting Dorian Mesambria (Mesembria), which was founded about one hundred years later. During the Byzantine Age they acquired strategic importance for the protection of Constantinople from attacks by northern peoples. After the founding of the Bulgarian Kingdom in 681, although they were frequently included within its borders, they steadfastly maintained their Byzantine structures and spiritual orientation towards Constantinople. The icons in the publication, charged with the invocations of those who commissioned them – referred to in the dedicatory inscriptions they carry – reveal aspects of the societies from which they come. Concurrently, they point out relations with and influences from the art of Constantinople and, after its capture by the Ottomans, by the schools of painting that emerged in the Greek Orthodox world and indeed in Crete. Publication of the catalogue was sponsored by the A.G. Leventis Foundation, with the contribution of the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments and Kapon Editions.
 

Tο βιβλίο αυτό εκδόθηκε για να πλαισιώσει την έκθεση “Εικόνες από τις θρακικές ακτές του Εύξεινου Πόντου” στο Μουσείο Βυζαντινού Πολιτισμού. Οι 52 βυζαντινές και μεταβυζαντινές εικόνες που μελετώνται προέρχονται από τη Βάρνα (Varna), τη Μεσημβρία (Nesebăr), τη Σωζόπολη (Sozopol), το Βασιλικό (Tsarevo) και την Αγαθούπολη (Ahtopol) στις βουλγαρικές ακτές της Μαύρης Θάλασσας, καθώς και από το ορεινό χωριό Brashlyan στον Μικρό Αίμο. Πρόκειται για πανάρχαιες πολιτείες που ιδρύθηκαν από τους Ίωνες τον 7ο αιώνα π.Χ., πλην της δωρικής Μεσάμβριας (Μεσημβρία), που ιδρύθηκε έναν περίπου αιώνα αργότερα. Κατά τη βυζαντινή περίοδο, οι πόλεις αυτές απέκτησαν εξαιρετική στρατηγική σημασία για την προστασία και άμυνα της Κωνσταντινούπολης από τις επιδρομές των βόρειων λαών. Μετά την ίδρυση του Βουλγαρικού Βασιλείου το 681, μολονότι βρέθηκαν συχνά στα όρια του Βουλγαρικού κράτους, διατήρησαν σταθερές τις βυζαντινές δομές τους και τον πνευματικό προσανατολισμό τους προς την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Οι εικόνες της έκδοσης φορτισμένες από τις ικεσίες των παραγγελιοδοτών τους – τους οποίους αναφέρουν οι αφιερωματικές επιγραφές που υπάρχουν σε αυτές – αποκαλύπτουν όψεις των κοινωνιών από τις οποίες προέρχονται. Παράλληλα επισημαίνουν σχέσεις και επιδράσεις από την τέχνη της Κωνσταντινούπολης και μετά την κατάλυσή της από τους Οθωμανούς, από τις ζωγραφικές σχολές που διαμορφώθηκαν στον ελληνικό ορθόδοξο κόσμο και μάλιστα στην Κρήτη. Η έκδοση του καταλόγου πραγματοποιήθηκε με χορηγία του Ιδρύματος Α.Γ. Λεβέντη, καθώς και τη συνδρομή του Ευρωπαϊκού Κέντρου Βυζαντινών και Μεταβυζαντινών Μνημείων και των Εκδόσεων Καπόν.
